The ultimate fly fishing experience
Dear Prospective New Zealand Flyfisherman
Over the last 25 years I have “chased”
trout around the world with my fly rod. I have been to dozens of lodges
and fished with many guides/outfitters in the Rocky Mountains, Canada,
Alaska, Iceland, Chile, Argentina, Russia and New Zealand. I have fished
with Peter Fordham for at least one week each season for the last 15 years
and I would like to tell you why I keep coming back year after year.
First, Peter’s operation is strictly
that of an outfitter/guide. He does not have a lodge on a specific river.
All of his clients stay in motels, home stays, backcountry huts, camping
etc. This flexibility of living arrangements allows Peter to put the client
where the fishing conditions and/or the water clarity are the best.
Second, Peter has dozens of possible
beats that can be accessed by vehicle and/or helicopter. In addition, he
is constantly searching for new water and developing access points to it.
Third, Peter is an extremely competent
guide that works very hard to give his client the best possible fishing
experience. His ability to pick out a trout to “sight fish”
is uncanny. He also has an amazing arsenal of flies in his vest to tempt
the most wary of trout.
Fourth, Peter is a very good teacher
for casting, drift management and playing very large trout on light tippet.
In addition, I am amazed how incredibly patient he is when retrieving my
gear from trees, bushes and untangling my knots.
Finally, I would say that the best part
of fishing with Peter is the feeling that I am fishing with a good friend.
If you choose him as your guide/outfitter, I’m sure you will have
a fun time while you are catching some of the largest trout on the planet.

Sometimes you feel like you win the lottery, and we felt that when we had Peter Fordham as our guide for seven days in November 2009. The rivers he brought us to, his enthusiasm and spirit, his skills and his ability to teach us in the specifics about how to fish for NZ trout - amazing! We had the time of our lives, quite a few nice trout, and we felt that we were on a field trip with a very good friend.

Dear Peter,
Your guiding during the last week of January was phenomenal. You put me
in extraordinary places, which yielded fabulous fish. While five pounds
was common, it was a thrill to put in the nets seven and eight pound browns
and rainbow.
Most important Peter is your willingness to share your knowledge with your
clients. I learned a great deal water, techniques, and the area we were
fishing. A week with you is a truly outstanding experience, and I am delighted
to book you again.
My only criticism is that your 6'4" height gives you a four foot stride.
Try to remember I am only 6' tall when we fish next year.

Peter, I think that this weekend brings to seven the trips which I have
shared with you in recent years.
